Juvéderm®

Juvéderm is a dermal filler that is injected under the skin. Juvéderm injections offer a non-invasive non-surgical treatment for those patients who want to develop and enrich the appearance of their face and lips but are not ready for more invasive surgical treatments.

Dr. Craft and your enhancement team will work with you to create a non-surgical plan to enrich the overall appearance of the face using Juvéderm.

Hyaluronic Acid

Juvéderm is a synthetic hyaluronic acid filler. Hyaluronic acid natural occurs in human bodies and is found in the fluid surrounding the eyes, in cartilage and joints and in skin tissue. Hyaluronic acid is also injected into damaged joints to increase padding in the joints. Hyaluronic acid is an essential component that forms the healthy structure of our skin. When we are younger, our skin has high levels of hyaluronic acid, but as we age and with exposure to wrinkle causing factors, the level of hyaluronic acid in our skin decreases. The decreased level can cause notable trauma and signs of aging such as wrinkles, lines and volume loss.

Synthetic hyaluronic acid can be injected into the face. When injected the acid acts like an expanded pillow supporting facial skin and tissues that have lost plumpness or smoothness because of aging of environmental damage. When injected the acid also makes skin look fresh and bright by encouraging water to the surface of the face.

Totally Non-invasive

Procedure

Juvéderm injections are a non-invasive non-surgical procedure that is generally completed within a half hour. Juvéderm injections can include anywhere between seven and twenty small injections.

Dr. Craft and your enhancement team will work with you to identify the problem areas to be treated with the Juvéderm injections. Dr. Craft may also consider Juvéderm injections in combination with other enhancement injections. If necessary, you may be injected with lidocaine or a topical cream to freeze the areas that will be injected. Dr. Craft will then inject Juvéderm into the appropriate areas.

You will notice results immediately. There may be some minor swelling and bruising but after the procedure you can return to your everyday activities. After the injections, you will minimize exposure of the treated area to the sun for 24 hours. Depending on the areas treated and your specific skin condition, Dr. Craft will explain after care to you following the procedure. Specifically, to decrease the risk and intensity of bruising, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E for at least one week before your procedure. You can apply ice following the procedure to minimize and swelling and discomfort. Dr. Craft and the enhancement team may also perform massage type movements following the procedures and you may need to avoid make up for 12 hours following the procedure.

Considerations

Although Juvéderm injections are non-invasive procedures, there are some considerations before choosing Juvéderm injections including:

  • Juvéderm injections should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the components.
  • Juvéderm injections should not be used on areas that are irritated or infected.
  • Juvéderm injections should not be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Juvéderm injections should not be used in people under 18.

The most common side effects for Juvéderm injections include minor swelling, bruising or discomfort to the treated area. There have also been a few reported cases of blindness and nerve paralysis. In extremely rare cases, a blood vessel can be accidentally ruptured leading to necrosis (tissue death), embolism or infraction. Hyaluronic acid fillers can also cause small bumps to appear under the skin, however, the Juvéderm formula generally avoid this side effect.

Before any Juvéderm injections, you will discuss your goals and medical history with Dr. Craft and your enhancement team. It is important that during this time you discuss any chin or neck surgery you’ve had, any cosmetic enhancements you’ve had done to your face, neck or chin and your medical history.
