Botox®/Dysport®

The procedure is considered a safe and effective method for treating aging and wrinkled skin. Common areas for Botox/Dysport injections include horizontal forehead furrows, vertical lines between the eyebrows and “crow’s feet” around the eyes. Botox/Dysport are proven to be the preeminent non- surgical form of facial rejuvenation and is capable of producing phenomenal improvements in your appearance, lifting sagging skin, smoothing wrinkles and ‘lifting’ or contouring the face.

Considering a Botox® Treatment

Wrinkles or rhytides are folds or creases in your skin caused when you skin moves in a particular way continually. When your skin moves in a particular way over and over, there is microscopic damage to the layers of your skin or derma. The derma works to repair this damage but during the repair process a crease or wrinkle may be formed.

Wrinkles usually appear due to age because of changes your skin naturally goes through when we age. Wrinkles are usually caused by moving your face in a manner consistently, the sun, aging, a history of smoking, poor hydration and weight gain and loss.

If you face contains wrinkles caused by sun damage, smoking, aging or other factors, you may consider the non-invasive advantages of Botox/Dysport. The injectable should be considered in patients experiencing:

  • Excessive facial wrinkles.
  • Worry lines or large wrinkles or furrows in your forehead.
  • Small wrinkles or “crow’s feet” around your eyes.
  • A vertical “frown line” between your eyebrows.
  • Laugh lines or wrinkles along your mouth.
  • Lines above the lip from smoking.

Injection Plan

Smooth Youthful Appearance

Botox/Dysport are injected into the skin to minimize wrinkles and enhance the appearance of the skin. Botox/Dysport consists of neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum called botulinum toxin. In high doses, botulinum toxin is actually very poisonous and is responsible for botulism, a severe and life threatening disease.

However, Botox/Dysport used during a liquid facelift is used safely through injections of a very small amount. Botox/Dysport works by interrupting signals from nerve cells to muscles, leaving muscles without instructions to move or contract effectively paralyzing the muscles and making them immoveable and the muscles stiffer. The stiffness of the muscles creates a smoothed youthful appearance of the skin.

Procedure

Prior to the procedure, you will meet with Dr. Craft and your enhancement team to identify problem areas and create a Botox/Dysport injection plan. Your enhancement team may recommend you avoid alcohol for one week prior to the procedure, and avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs two weeks prior to the procedure to reduce bruising post procedure.

Botox/Dysport is not done under anesthetic, and a very small needle is used for the injections with only minor discomfort reported in some patients. If necessary, a topical cream may be applied to freeze the areas that will be injected. Dr. Craft will then inject into the appropriate areas. Typically a small amount (1-2 cc’s) is injected into the area. Botox/Dysport injection treatment can include anywhere between twenty and fifty small injections. Depending on the number and complexity of your problem areas, the injection treatment will be completed in under an hour.

Choosing An Injectable

Although Botox/Dysport injections are a non-invasive procedure, there are some considerations before choosing an injectable including:

  • Botox/Dysport injections should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the components.
  • Botox/Dysport should not be used on areas that are irritated or infected.
  • Botox/Dysport should not be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Botox/Dysport should not be used in people under 18.

The most common side effects for both Botox and Dysport include minor swelling, bruising or discomfort to the treated area. There have also been a few reported cases of blindness and nerve paralysis. In extremely rare cases, a blood vessel can be accidentally rupture leading to necrosis (tissue death), embolism or infraction.

Botox/Dysport has been demonstrated to cause mild side effects such as headaches. The use of Botox/Dysport in very rare cases can cause spatial disorientation, focal facial paralysis, dyspnea and anaphylaxis.

Rest & Recovery

Recovery Process

Although it does take up to seven days for the full effect of the injections to be noticeable, you will notice results immediately.

  • There may be some minor swelling and bruising but after the procedure you can return to your everyday activities.
  • After the injections, you will minimize exposure of the treated area to the sun for 24 hours.
  • Depending on the areas treated and your specific skin condition, Dr. Craft will explain after care to you following the procedure.

Patients generally return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, however following the post-procedure guidelines will dramatically reduce the length and intensity of the recovery period. Patients should avoid engaging in heavy physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for a minimum of 4 hours after the injections. It is also advisable to avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least 24 hours.

The effects of a Botox/Dysport treatment will last approximately three to six months after which the patient may choose to repeat the procedure.

faq

If I’ve had a Botox/Dysport treatment somewhere else but I’m unhappy with the results can you reverse it?

Answer: Although the injections are a non-invasive temporary treatment for wrinkles and signs of aging, it is still critical to ensure the surgeon injecting the Botox/Dysport is both skilled and experienced in the injections. Some adverse results after a Botox/Dysport treatment can include excessive bruising or swelling, disproportionate facial appearance and in some cases an appearance that the face is partially “frozen.” These results are errors that may be caused by the location of the injections; the numbers of injections, the amount of Botox/Dysport injected and even a lack of consideration for your tissue type. Although these results can be devastating, it’s important to remember the effects are only temporary.

It is not possible to reverse the appearance post Botox/Dysport injections and unfortunately the best course of action is to wait out the undesirable appearance. Once the results have begun to improve, book a consultation appointment with Dr. Craft and his team to ensure you are receiving your next Botox/Dysport injections from a surgeon with the experience and skill to give you the radiant appearance you so desire.
