Voluma injections are a non-surgical treatment option that enhances the overall appearance of the upper face by adding volume and ‘lifting’ or contouring the face. Voluma is a dermal filler that is injected under the skin. Due to age related skin and tissue changes, cheeks can become sunken with sagging skin and unattractively slender.
Voluma injections can add volume and boost these facial areas are desired. Voluma injections offer a non-invasive non-surgical treatment for those patients who want to develop and enrich the overall appearance of cheeks but are not ready for more invasive treatments. Dr. Craft and your enhancement team will work with you to create a non-surgical plan to enrich the overall appearance of the face using Voluma.
Synthetic Hyaluronic Acid
Voluma is a synthetic hyaluronic acid filler. Hyaluronic acid natural occurs in human bodies and is found in the fluid surrounding the eyes, in cartilage and joints and in skin tissue. Hyaluronic acid is also injected into damaged joints to increase padding in the joints. Synthetic hyaluronic acid can be injected into the face. When injected the acid acts like an expanded pillow supporting facial skin and tissues that have lost plumpness or smoothness because of aging of environmental damage. When injected the acid also makes skin look fresh and bright by encouraging water to the surface of the face. Voluma also contains a small amount of lidocaine to minimize discomfort during injections.

Dr. Craft and your enhancement team will work with you to identify problem areas and create an enhancement plan. Voluma injections can provide many benefits and including:

Supports Facial Skin
Voluma injections are a non-invasive non-surgical procedure that is generally completed within a half-hour. Voluma injections can include anywhere between seven and twenty small injections. Dr. Craft and your enhancement team will work with you to identify the problem areas to be treated with the Voluma injections. Dr. Craft may also consider Voluma injections in combination with other enhancement injections. Once you are in the office and the enhancement team has set up, Dr. Craft will then inject Voluma into the appropriate areas.
You will notice results immediately. There may be some minor swelling and bruising but after the procedure you can return to your everyday activities. After the injections, you will minimize exposure of the treated area to the sun for 24 hours and minimize strenuous activity.
Depending on the areas treated and your specific skin condition, Dr. Craft will explain after care to you following the procedure. Specifically, to decrease the risk and intensity of bruising, stay away from aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E for at least one week before your procedure. You can apply ice following the procedure to minimize and swelling and discomfort.
Although Voluma injections are non-invasive procedures, there are some considerations before choosing a liquid facelift including:
- Voluma injections should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the components including lidocaine.
- Voluma injections should not be used on areas that are irritated or infected.
- Voluma injections should not be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Voluma injections should not be used in people under 21.
- Tell your doctor if you have a history of pigmentation changes or excessive scarring.
The most common side effects for Voluma injections include minor swelling, redness, bruising, discoloration, itchiness or discomfort to the treated area. Voluma fillers can also cause small bumps to appear under the skin.
These common side effects generally disappear within two weeks. There have also been a few reported cases of vision problems. In extremely rare cases, a blood vessel can be accidentally ruptured leading to necrosis (tissue death), embolism or infraction.
Before Voluma injections you will discuss your goals and medical history with Dr. Craft and your enhancement team. It is important that during this time you discuss any face surgery you’ve had, any cosmetic enhancements you’ve had done to your face, neck or chin and your medical history, including medications.

Voluma injections are not permanent and ongoing treatments are necessary to encourage continually optimal appearance. However, unlike many other enhancement injections, Voluma lasts a lot longer – up to two years.
Dr. Craft and your enhancement team will inform you of the timelines and can work with you to set up a procedure schedule as necessary.
If I am having side effects after the procedure, when should I call my enhancement team?
Answer: Some minor side effects are normal after injections. However, follow up with your enhancement team if:
- You experience any minor side effects that last longer than four days (swelling, redness, pain etc.)
- You experience moderate to significant pain from the injection sites.
- If you have bumps or lumps in the skin after four days.
- Any other adverse effects that last for four days or longer.
How many injections will I receive?
Answer: This depends on the amount of augmentation, the size of the area and your requested results. Generally the amount of injections per session is anywhere from 12 to 25. Dr. Craft will explain the number and locations of the injections to you more thoroughly during your consultation.
Do the injections hurt?
Answer: Because of the lidocaine in the Voluma formula, most patients report no discomfort or pain during the injections. The amount of discomfort experienced is really individual and dependent on your pain tolerance, the amount of fat in the area and your skin. Dr. Craft will explain the injections to you more thoroughly during your consultation.
Will I need additional treatments after this procedure?
Answer: The effects from Voluma injections do last for two years. After those two years you may choose to have additional injections. It is common for some patients to require minor follow up injections a month or two after the initial injection. Dr. Craft and your enhancement team can explain the necessity of follow up procedures during your consultation.
