Microliposuction – Transfer Fat to Add Volume & Tone

Learn More about Fat Grafting Surgery

Fat cells are transfered to the face in order to achieve more volume, enhance skin and create a smoothed and toned look.

Fat grafting, also called autologous fat transplantation and microlipoinjection, removes fat from one area of the body, and transfers it to another area of the body to add volume and tone.

Fat Grafting Procedure

Generally, fat that is removed from the donor site is injected into recipient sites on the face that require added volume, such as the cheeks, chin or lips. The donor sites that fat is extracted from are usually locations on the body that suffer from stubborn fat such as the buttocks, abdomen and thighs.

Because fat grafting removes fat and re-injects it to add volume, fat grafting is used as a less-invasive alternative to implants. In recent years, fat grafting has become very popular and is widely considered to be one of the best ways to transfer fat from areas with excess fat, such as the buttocks and thighs, to areas that require more fat cells in the face to order to achieve more volume, enhance skin and create a smoothed and toned look.

Procedure & Considerations

Individuals considering fat grafting to improve problem areas in their body may identify the following challenges:

  • Inability of dieting and exercise to lose weight in identified areas.
  • Excessive accumulation of sagging or hanging skin following weight loss.
  • Unsightly skin and fat deposits.
  • Shallow or lack of volume in the facial area of the body.

The fat transfer process begins with liposuction to remove excess fat from the donor site. This could include the abdomen, thighs, hips or buttocks. There are three common liposuction methods used during liposuction procedures. Prior to surgery, Dr. Craft will choose the liposuction method that is most appropriate for your surgery.

All three methods involve detaching and isolating fat for removal. Once the fat is dislodged, the surgeon makes very small incisions in the skin and inserts very small tubes called cannulas into the incisions. The surgeon then removes the fat through the cannulas. After eliminating the excess fat, the incisions are closed by applying an advanced dressing to the area in order to prevent bleeding, reduce swelling, and support the affected area.

The cells from the removed fat are further removed with a small hypodermic needle designed to limit the damage to the fat cells. Then the fat is spun at a very high speed within a centrifuge to separate the fat cells from the liquid removed by the liposuction. Damaged fat cells are removed and whole cleansed cells are then used for the fat transfer process.

Dr. Craft will then inject the cleansed cells into the target facial area that is lacking volume at a depth required to achieve the ideal aesthetic results.

Is Fat Grafting Right For You?

Microliposuction Candidates

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for fat grafting. Before determining that fat grafting is right for you, consider the following ideal candidate qualities:

  • Individuals who have identified areas of their body that has enough fat to be extracted.
  • Individuals who have identified other areas of their body that require more volume (for the fat graft deposit).
  • Individuals without co-morbidities or other factors that may impede.
  • Individuals who do not smoke.

Rest & Recovery

Recovery Process

The length of the recovery will depend on how extensive of a procedure the patient undergoes. Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and reduce the recovery time.

Depending on the area fat transfer was performed; a support garment may need to be worn for three to six weeks after the surgery. These garments can help prevent bruising and swelling. Patients sometimes report pain after the procedure. Commonly, the most discomfort is felt the first 48 hours following the procedure and slight discomfort may be reported for several months following the procedure. The soreness and discomfort can be treated effectively with oral medication.

While complications are rare, patients can minimize the risk for potential problems by carefully following the directions given after surgery. Although some results are apparent immediately following a fat grafting procedure, for the first few weeks’ post-surgery, most patients report swelling and puffiness. These symptoms are gradually reduced and resolve within four to six weeks following the surgery.

Set up a consultation where you can meet with Dr. Craft and his team in an environment of refined and sophisticated comfort. After learning about your goals and desired outcomes, Dr. Craft will explain all surgical and non-surgical options so you can effectively set and achieve your appearance goals.
