Following the procedure, you will be taken to the recovery room, where you will gradually wake from the anesthesia. While the length of time spent in the recovery room depends on a number of factors, including how quickly your body metabolizes the anesthetic, on average, patients spend about one to two hours in the recovery room. Most patients do not recall recovery time in the facility due to the effects of anesthesia. While a small percentage of patients may experience nausea due to the anesthetic, medication can be provided to alleviate this discomfort. We will also ensure that you are kept comfortable by providing pain medication as needed and warm blankets as desired.
Post-Op Recovery
Once you feel fully awake and alert and able to take some food and water, you will be permitted to leave the facility. Although rare, in some instances, patients are required to stay overnight so we can monitor their progress and ensure a speedy recovery. This is only necessary when the surgery is unusually long or when there are underlying health concerns. Once you return home, it is important to be sure that a friend or family member can be by your side for at least the first 24 hours following your procedure as you may require their assistance.
