Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

For many individuals who want to re-shape their body, the stomach can be a troublesome area. Despite our best efforts, stubborn pockets of fat often persist on the abdomen, unresponsive to diet and exercise. This extremely frustrating phenomenon causes many men and women alike to consider undergoing a body contouring surgery such as a tummy tuck or liposuction in Miami. While both procedures can be used to provide greater definition to the abdomen, they utilize very different techniques and it is important to understand their distinctions when choosing between liposuction or a tummy tuck.

A Miami Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the abdomen, while also tightening abdominal muscles. To do so, the plastic surgeon makes an incision along the lower abdomen, enabling him to stretch the skin downward and remove excess, perform liposuction if necessary and draw separated muscles tightly together, improving the waist’s contour. A second incision is frequently required around the navel to facilitate the removal of excess skin and reconstruction of the umbilicus.

This procedure successfully treats rectus diastasis, the separation of abdominal muscles which frequently occurs following pregnancy or significant weight fluctuations leading to limited core strength. Once these muscles have been repaired, patients can work to further strengthen and tone the abdomen through exercise and they may find this type of activity more comfortable.

Due to the size of the incision made, a tummy tuck is considered a more invasive procedure and must be performed under a general anaesthetic. While it can yield dramatic results and effectively contour the abdomen, it does not treat excess fat in surrounding problem areas such as the flanks. Instead, it is frequently combined with additional liposuction in order to deliver consistent, even results.

Miami Liposuction

Liposuction is a less invasive surgical procedure which works to remove stubborn pockets of fat but does not address excess skin. Unlike a tummy tuck, liposuction can treat numerous areas of the body, including the abdomen, hips, arms and thighs. There are several liposuction techniques including ultrasound-assisted liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction, and tumescent liposuction; Dr. Craft will determine the most suitable method for your particular goals. Regardless of which technique is selected, excess fat is first dislodged and isolated for removal. The plastic surgeon then makes tiny, 3-4mm incisions in the skin through which small tubes, or cannulas, are inserted. The dislodged fat is removed through the cannulas and the incisions are closed.

Liposuction is recommended for patients who are within 10% of their ideal body weight but struggle to eliminate localized fatty deposits through diet and exercise. Because this procedure does not remove skin, it is imperative that patients undergoing liposuction have sufficient skin elasticity, as the skin must contract and tighten to the patient’s newly contoured physique. Thus, patients with poor skin tone on the abdomen may be better suited to a tummy tuck.
